A year after Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan made derogatory remarks about the Indian Army, the Uttar Pradesh government has approved the filing of a chargesheet against him.
"Administration grants approval to police for action against former Uttar Pradesh minister Azam Khan in a police complaint filed against him for a press statement he made against Indian Army on June 27, 2017," Rampur Additional Superintendent of Police Sudha Singh told reporters here.
A complaint had been filed by Akash Saxena, son of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader under Sections 153A and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code.
Apart from Saxena's complaint, three other complaints were registered against Khan over his controversial remark against the Indian Army.
Khan waded into another controversy in June last year with his statement that appeared to suggest that Indian soldiers have been indulging in rape.
The Samajwadi Party leader had said that 'terrorists had been chopping off private parts of Army personnel to send 'a strong message that should leave the entire nation ashamed.'
However, Khan claimed that his statement was misconstrued by the media.
