Consequences if restrictions imposed on rallies addressed by Modi: BJP

Media reports have suggested that officials in the UP government are skeptic to let Modi go on with his election campaign in the state

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Tuesday said his party would not abandon its schedule of election campaign rallies, despite reports suggesting that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav might put restrictions on Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's rally in his state.

"We will go on with rallies in Uttar Pradesh. All our rallies will go on according to plan. If the Uttar Pradesh Government tries to put any restrictions, there will not be good consequences," Naqvi said.

Media reports have suggested that officials in the Uttar Pradesh Government have expressed skepticism to let Modi go on with his election campaign in the state, in wake of the recent communal riots.

Reportedly, permission also may not be granted on the dates proposed by the BJP as the October 15 rally in Kanpur, which has a sizable Muslim population, falls on Bakr Id.

The BJP has also planned to hold Modi rallies in Kanpur on October 15, in Jhansi on October 25 and in Bahraich on November 8.
