Both govt and ISIS guilty of human rights violations in Syria: UN

An investigation by the United Nations into the atrocities committed in Syria in the recent months has revealed that both the government and the militant group, Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) are guilty of committing horrendous crimes.

A report released by the investigators said that public executions were a common sight in the areas controlled by the ISIS and in some instances, there is enough evidence to believe that civilian population was targeted deliberately, reported the BBC. The report also held them guilty for recruiting children as fighters.

The Syrian government, on the other hand, was accused of using chlorine gas, a chemical weapon, in separate incidents in April and May this year.

The report also said that the nation's air force had used barrel bombs on civilians. It also added that prisoners housed in government prisons had undergone "horrific torture and sexual assault."

The findings were based on interviews and evidence gathered between January and July this year during an investigation into alleged human rights violations in Syria.

The conflict that began in 2011 has already claimed the lives of 200,000 people.
