The Union Cabinet on Monday approved a proposal to transfer land orginally owned by Indu Mill to the Maharashtra Government for constructing a memorial for Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar, the father of the Indian Constitution and noted Dalit leader.
The Cabinet took the decision at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The approved proposal empowers the Centre to acquire a certain part of the mill belonging to National Textile Corporation Limited in Mumbai to construct the memorial.
Sources said the government will introduce a bill in parliament to facilitate the transfer of land to the Maharashtra Government.
Dr. Ambedkar's ashes are currently interred at Chaitya Bhoomi, which is near the Indu Mill.
