Chief Election Commissioner V.S. Sampath will demit office today after being in the post for nearly six years. He is most likely to be succeeded by H.S. Brahma.
Reports said that Sampath turns 65 today, the upper age limit under the Constitution for holding the post.
During his tenure, Sampath conducted two Lok Sabha elections and at least one round of Assembly polls in all states.
Brahma, an IAS officer of the 1975 batch from the Andhra Pradesh cadre hails from Assam and is a former union power secretary.
