Celebs pay respect to Nelson Mandela on Twitter

Celebrities and notable personalities have flooded Twitter with condolences to former South African President Nelson Mandela's family and the world for the loss of a legend.

Mandela, aged 95, died at his Johannesburg home last night following a recurring lung infection.

According to News.com.au, Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge paid tribute to the anti-apartheid hero at the premiere of a biopic about him, "Mandela: The Long Road To Freedom", which was shown the same night he departed at his home.

American comedian and political activist Whoopi Goldberg tweeted: "I want to give the world a hug I was told Mandeba just passed. Nelson Mandela R.I.P."

American retired boxer Mike Tyson tweeted: "I'm hearing about Nelson Mandela's death while on African soil in Oran, Algeria. Sending prayers to Mandela's family."

Chelsea Clinton wrote: "My thoughts and prayers are with Graca Machel and the Mandela family. We are all the richer for Madiba's extraordinary life."

Bill Gates tweeted: "His grace and courage changed the world. This is a sad day."

UK PM David Cameron tweeted: "A great light has gone out in the world. Nelson Mandela was a hero of our time. I've asked for the flag at No10 to be flown at half mast."

Rihanna wrote: "Nelson Mandela you made your people proud!! We'll always love you for it!"

Kevin Rudd tweeted: "the transformational power of forgiveness and reconciliation. Man of the century: Nelson Mandela."

Lindsay Lohan tweeted: "A good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination.
