The All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretaries have demanded that party vice-president Rahul Gandhi be appointed as the president at the earliest.
According to sources, some of the secretaries are of the view that a few people having vested interest are procrastinating this decision.
The Congress Working Committee (CWC) had earlier on November 7 unanimously supported a proposal in this regard.
In 2014, when the Congress plummeted to a historic low, winning just 44 parliamentary seats, a shocked party put off the elevation of Gandhi for a more propitious occasion.
But after two and a half years of the Narendra Modi government, a section of the party began to stress that the moment of renewal could not be deferred any longer.
There have been repeated suggestions that Gandhi should take over reins of the party from his mother and Congress president Sonia Gandhi.
