Cong slams Centre's stubborn attitude, says ready for debate in Parliament

The Congress Party on Tuesday held the stubborn approach of the BJP-led NDA regime responsible for repeated disruptions in both Houses and said that the opposition was ready for debate in Parliament.

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, alleged that the people of the nation are suffering because of the government's stubbornness.

"We had clearly said that the adjournment motion should be allowed and let the debate take place. As through debate, we can put forth the grievances of the common man in front of the Parliament," Kharge told ANI here.

Kharge had earlier said that the government announced the demonetisation of high-value currency notes without any preparation and the Opposition wants a serious discussion on the issue under the rules that entail voting.

He said that the Congress was willing to debate the issue under Rule 56 but the government wanted to discuss it under Rule 193, which does not entail voting.

"It is merely a formality. The government is evading questions," he alleged.

Parliament was disrupted yet again yesterday with the Opposition changing tact in Rajya Sabha demanding adoption of a condolence resolution for those who have died in queues in banks post the demonetisation move and pressing for voting on a discussion that entails voting.

Both Houses had to be adjourned multiple times through the day only to be reconvened for a brief couple of minutes before chaos ensued again.

The last three days in Parliament witnessed the Opposition and ruling members enter into a heated argument over the move to withdraw Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 currency notes.
