The Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party on Monday showed its support for net neutrality, after the principle came under question in India, following the announcement of a service provider that it would charge additional rates for making voice calls (VoIP) on its network.
Congress leader Digvijay Singh showed his support for net neutrality, sharing the fact that he had asked a question in the Rajya Sabha with respect to the debate.
"I support Net Neutrality and had asked question in Rajya Sabha . Answer- GOI considering! Consider? Just do it!" he tweeted.
"#SaveTheInternet
Request to all my followers on facebook and twitter pl support this movement. Country needs NET NEUTRALITY. Go ahead!" he added.
Delhi Chief Minister too pledged his support for net neutrality.
"AAP committed to neutral internet. India MUST debate #NetNeutrality. I support #Saveinternet campaign," he tweeted.
Meanwhile, Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology RS Prasad said that his ministry has constituted a committee for the same.
"The IT Ministry has constituted a committee on the net neutrality issue. The report will have to be submitted by the second week of May," he said.
Net neutrality promises all content on the internet to be treated equally and not discriminating on the basis of user, content, platform, and so on.
At present, India has no laws with respect to net neutrality.
