The wrecked Costa Concordia will be removed from the shoreline of the Italian island of Giglio by mid-2014.

The wrecked cruise liner was successfully lifted from the rocks it had been wedged against for the last 20 months.

The operation to straighten the 300-metre, 103,420 tonnes vessel by 65 degrees took 19 hours, news.com.au reports.

According to the report, once re-floated, the Concordia is expected to be towed away to a yet-to-be decided port for dismantling.
