Condemning reports of multiple gang-rapes taking place in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur District, Communist Party of India (CPI) leader Annie Raja on Monday said that the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party (SP) must stop supporting anti-women elements.
"In Uttar Pradesh, it is happening repeatedly, and now, they are all busy in "Gathbandhan" making. They (SP) have proved time and again that they are incapable of ruling that state. In a way, the Samajwadi Party is encouraging anti-women forces there and this is the result," Raja told ANI.
"This is the repetition of what has been happening in Uttar Pradesh and other parts of this country. Even in Delhi, the government is thinking of making anti-rape laws more stringent," she added.
"How much political will and social commitment you have to see that the existing law is implemented in letter and spirit. Nobody is talking about that. Everyone is talking about strengthening, which is good," she said.
Raja further condemned the state government's attitude on the issue of rape and demanded strong action be taken against the culprits.
"So far no action has been taken for these two incidences. There is no arrest so far. The government should immediately take note of it and see that the police force do their work on time and ensure justice to the victims," she added.
Two new cases of gang-rapes have been reported in Kanpur. In the first case, a class eight girl was allegedly gang-raped by four men in a moving car.
The police have registered the case against the four accused and the victim has been sent to hospital for a medical check-up.
In another case, a 16-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped in Patara village in the Kanpur Nagar District of the state by two men.
A case has been registered with the Ghatampur police station on the basis of a statement given by the victim. Police, however, are yet to nab the two accused.
