Delhi Assembly polls: Last day of campaigning today

Campaigning for the December 4 assembly polls in Delhi will end on Monday at 5.30 p.m.

On Sunday, leaders of major parties hit the streets and addressed over 25 rallies and road shows in the national capital.

They included BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati and Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal.

The atmosphere was electric at the Virat Cinema ground with approximately 10,000 people chanting Modi's name as he walked up to the podium to address his final rally.

During the rally, Modi made a scathing attack against the Congress. He mocked at 'Shehzada' (Rahul Gandhi), reminding that when he held a rally at the same venue, less than 50 people attended it.

"The turnout here today proves that these upcoming elections are no longer being contested by political parties, but by the people of this country. The 74 per cent polling in Rajasthan and the presence of thousands of people here is an indication that they are against the incompetent and corrupt Congress party," he said.

Reminding the people of Sheila Dikshit's comments about how she is unable to cope up with the increasing number of migrants in the Capital, Modi rebutted: "If the Congress party had introduced enough opportunities for employment and bettered infrastructure in suburbs and villages, none of the migrants would have come to Delhi. No son wants to leave his mother to go live in a slum, sewer or under a flyover."

"I want the Congress to remember, that I am not Mulayam Singh, Mayawati or Mamata Banerjee who they can toy around, I am Narendra Modi and they shouldn't forget that," Modi said.

Nitish Kumar also held a few rallies in Kiradi Burari and Ghoda in order to woo Purvanchali voters in the area.

"It is the Purvanchali people who have built this city and no politician can claim otherwise. Delhi is as much as ours as it is of people from other regional backgrounds," he said.

While BJP leaders mocked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh cancelling his rallies in Delhi after witnessing low turnouts in the rallies held by Rahul Gandhi, the Congress on Sunday rubbished the BJP's claim that they were not pulling crowds like those addressed by Narendra Modi.

BSP supremo Mayawati also addressed two rallies. She attacked the UPA government, alleging that its wrong policies has lead to rise in the prices of essential commodities in the country, which has hit the poor and middle class hard. Prominent BJP and AAP leaders also held several rallies and road shows.
