Having ensured compliance of all relevant standards, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Thursday issued the Aerodrome Licence to Maharashtra's Shirdi Airport for public use during the day.
In 2011, the Ministry of Civil Aviation had granted 'in principal' approval to the green field airport at the Kakadi village in Kopargaon Taluka of the Ahmednagar district, Maharashtra, which has been developed by the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC).
The runway of the Shirdi Airport is 2,500 metres and is capable of handling Code 3C type aircrafts, that is, A320, B737.
The Maharashtra Government had sought the approval of the DGCA to begin operations at the Shirdi Airport, as far back as in February, 2016.
However, the DGCA officials had refused licence after they found that a part of the airport's boundary wall was incomplete.
