The Indian batsmen put up a horror show with the bat as they managed only 112.
The batsmen were at all sea against the moving ball.
Suranga Lakmal was the standout bowler with 4 for 13. Angelo Mathews was particularly difficult to get away. Nuwan Pradeep took 2 for 37.
Sri Lanka's captain Thisara Perera and spinners Akila Dananjaya and Sachith Pathirana took a wicket apiece.
The Indian batsmen exposed their weakness on conditions favouring fast bowlers.
MS Dhoni was the only batsman to standout with a fighting 67. Kuldeep Yadav scored a handy 19 and ably supported Dhoni. Both of them shared a 41-run partnership. The others failed to chip in and reach double figures.
Manish Pandey, Dinesh Karthik and Shikhar Dhawan found it tough to face the Lankan pacers. Shreyas Iyer, who got his ODI cap, failed to make any impression. All of them played horrendous shots to leave India reeling.
Earlier, Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bowl first. Sri Lanka now need 113 runs to win to go 1-0 up in the three match ODI series.
