Women, it's time to start paying more attention to your blood sugar levels as a new study has linked Type 2 Diabetes to Alzheimer's Disease.

In the study, University of Turku researchers tested the language skills, semantic memory and executive functions of 5,935 men and women, ages 30 to 97.

According to the U.S. News and World Report, the researchers found that higher levels of insulin resistance were associated with poorer scores in women, but not in men, which suggested that women's brains may be more vulnerable to the effects of insulin resistance than men's brains.

Lead author Laura Ekblad said when insulin resistance was present, there was too much insulin circulating in the blood flow, which led to a reduced transportation of insulin to the brain, and added that previous studies show that reduced brain insulin levels could directly contribute to cognitive decline and the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease in multiple ways.

Ekblad concluded that taking control of blood sugar levels in the present, might mean the difference between a future with or without Alzheimer's.
