The Delhi Police on Wednesday fired water cannons at Delhi University students protesting against the implementation of four-year undergraduate course and demanding an immediate roll back.

Students pointed out that extension would hamper their future prospects of perusing their careers late by one year.

The Bharatiya Janata Party's youth wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has been supporting and fighting for the cause.

Police resorted to baton charge and fired water cannons at the students, protesting outside the Delhi University Campus, after they turned violent.

Criticising Vice Chancellor of Delhi University Dinesh Pant, ABVP National Secretary Rohit Chahal said implementation of the four-year course was unfair and unnecessarily forced on the students by the university administration.

"The Vice Chancellor of Delhi University Dinesh Pant is acting like a dictator. The way he has forced four years course on students is not in favour of student's community. He should do things that are in favour of students and should keep away from unnecessary steps like this. We demand immediate roll back of four years course at Delhi University," he said.

Protesters climbed over the barricades in order to enter the premises but the police managed to detain few agitating students.

Delhi University's four year under graduate course is under criticism by major sections of students and teachers.

From the last academic year, the university had changed its three-year undergraduate course to four years. The new course intends to redefine the academic structure at Delhi University.
