Former 400m hurdles world champion Nicholas Bett of Kenya died in a car accident on Tuesday. He was 28.

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) took to their official Twitter handle and expressed condolence over the sudden demise of the athlete.

"The IAAF is deeply saddened and shocked to hear that Kenya's 2015 world 400m hurdles champion Nicholas Bett, 28, died in a car accident on Tuesday (7). RIP," the IAAF wrote.

Bett, who was initially inclined towards volleyball, stunned the athletics world by clinching gold in 2015 IAAF World Championship in Beijing. He set a Kenyan record of 47.79 which was the fastest time in the world that year.

Earlier this year, Bett participated in the Commonwealth Games in Australia where he finished at the eighth spot in the 400m hurdles.
