Sports Authority of India (SAI) Director General Injeti Sriniwas on Thursday said the suicide attempt by four women athletes in Kerala was the 'most tragic' incident in the history
of the sports body.
"This is the most tragic incident in history of Sports Authority. As a national body, we consider it our responsibility to see if any deficiency is there in our system which led this to happen," Sriniwas said during a press briefing.
"We have been in touch with the state and district authorities. The police is investigating the matter. Deposition of one of the girl trainees has been recorded. The girls have actually left behind a suicide note which contains their version of what happened," he added.
Meanwhile, Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Sarbananda Sonowal has stated that he is deeply aggrieved by the incident.
"I am deeply aggrieved by the incident that has happened in Kerala. The young girl who has died was a very promising sportsperson. It is a big loss to the country in general and Sports Authority of India and sports fraternity in particular," he said.
"I convey my condolences to the bereaved family. We will give all possible help to the bereaved family," he added,
According to reports, four girls at the SAI hostel in Kerala attempted suicide after allegedly being harassed, after which, one of the students died and the other three are in a critical condition.
