World Cup 2014 was the most talked about event on social media ever, revealed a report. The accomplishment is just an addition to the long list of firsts that the event saw this year including Germany's historic win over Argentina.

According to CNet, while Twitter recorded 627 million tweets relating to the World Cup, Facebook saw 350 million users posting more than 3 billion interactions (posts, comments, and likes) related to the games.

With 88 million users posting more than 280 million interactions related to the final match on Facebook, Sunday's final lockdown between Germany and Argentina was the biggest sporting event in the history of social media, revealed the social networking website. However, on Twitter, the semifinal match between Brazil and Germany emerged as the winner with almost 35.6 million tweets to its credit.

While Brazil's Neymar walked away with the title of the most talked about player on social media ever, Argentina's Lionel Messi followed him closely. The third position however, saw a tie between Uruguay's Luis Suarez and Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo with Suarez securing the third position on Twitter and Ronaldo on Facebook.

The revelations were based on an online poll ran by Facebook during the tournament that tracked and analyzed what teams its users were supporting. As users criticized and admired the world cup teams and predicted the outcomes of the games on social media, the tournament united football lovers from across the globe during the tournament, the report added.
