First modern sports stadium under construction in Jorhat

Development activities have gained momentum in Assam's Jorhat city, and the state government is leaving no stone unturned in improving the infrastructure to promote all round growth in the region.

One of the oldest sports fields of Assam, which is run by Jorhat District Sport Association, will be soon transformed into an international standard stadium. The sports complex is being constructed at a cost of over six crore.

While the gallery is being sponsored by the Non Lapsable Central Pool of Resource (NLCPR) under the DoNER Ministry, the United Fund of Jorhat District Administration is funding the construction of the grounds and other facilities.

The stadium will have a sitting capacity of 25,000 people. The project began in 2008-2009 and is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

"This new stadium will definitely encourage the youngsters. There are many talented players in Jorhat so it will motivate them in the field of sports," said Parthajit Borah, a volleyball player from Jorhat.

The work is progressing rapidly, and 90 per cent of the stadium has been completed.

In addition, the construction of a cricket pitch, volleyball court, 400 meters track, accommodation building for 100 athletes and the construction of an Indoor stadium in Titabor sub-division, Jorhat is in full swing.

These stadiums will provide good facilities for sportspersons in the future.

"We don't have a proper field to play but now they are constructing a new stadium so I am so happy. We do a cricket coaching here so after completing the constructio9n we can now come and practice every day," said Thruvdhir, a player.

"They are constructing an International Standard Stadium so I am so happy that we can now come and watch the international cricket match here," added Subham Goel, another player.

Youth in Jorhat have the potential to do well in sports, and such initiatives of the state government to promote sports and allied infrastructure in the region will definitely prove beneficial in the long run.
