1995 US PGA champion Steve Elkington became another Australian sports player to get involved in a racism row after he used the term 'Paki' on his Twitter account, without a faint idea that it was an abusive term.
According to Sport24, Elkington is competing at the Senior British Open at the Royal Birkdale course in Southport, a coastal town near Liverpool in northwest England and posted on his Twitter account that couple of caddies got rolled by some Pakkis, so it was a bad night for them.
This followed a Twitter post on Friday in which Elkington wrote even more offensive things, the report said.
A statement in Elkington's name was issued 20 minutes after he teed off in a third round where he shot a one-over par 71 on Saturday in which the golfer explained he had no idea 'Pakki', more commonly spelt as 'Paki' and long regarded in Britain as a highly offensive term, was an objectionable word, the report added.
Elkington released a statement declaring he was prepared to adhere to any disciplinary action that the Championship saw fit, the report further said.
