After more than two years of delay, electric car racing will finally take off this year in the streets of Beijing in September.

Formula E racing, which is composed of single seat electric powered cars like the ones in Formula One will hit the streets of Beijing and also travel to other cities like Los Angeles, Miami, Buenos Aires and Monte Carlo this year.

According to News24, a representative has said that Formula E racing, which starts on September 13, is going to comprise of 10 races in 10 cities.

The series would reportedly be run along the lines of Formula One and would witness 10 teams competiting against each other in an open championship, including former F1 champion Alain Prost as team principal of e-DAMS.

However, electric car technology in racing presents unique challenges and the race would be completed in one hour because in order to achieve performance, the batteries would be pushed, the report added.

The first car, which has been approved for racing, is the Spark-Renault SRT-01E with its 0-100km/h-acceleration time of three seconds, and a top speed limit of 225km/h, the report added.
