Union Civil Minister Ashok Gajapati Raju on Sunday laid the foundation stone of the new integrated terminal building at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati.
He was accompanied by Assam Chief Minister Sarbanand Sonowal.
Spread in an area of 90,000 square meters, the building will be equipped with world-class passenger facilities and will have a capacity to handle 3100 passengers in a peak hour.
The interiors of the building will depict local handicrafts, murals and popular tourist destinations of the state.
With this new Integrated Terminal Building in LGB, Northeast India will position itself as a gateway to Southeast Asia.
"We are confident that this facility will be up and alive by 2020 so this will be a very facility for the state of Assam", said Ashok Gajapati Raju at the event.
"If Indians can work together as a team there is no reason that we reach the first place in all parameters", added Gajapati.
Speaking to ANI, Raheja Member (Planning) of Airports Authority of India (AAI) said that the new integrated terminal building at the Guwahati Airport can transport 3100 peak hour passengers at a time.
"Existing terminal building has a capacity of 3.5 million passengers per annum. Previously it handled 3.8 million passengers per annum that's why the building is being very congested. The new integrated building which we have planned is 19 thousand square meters. At one time 3100 peak hour passengers at a time will be handled," Raheja told ANI.
