Amid speculations of a likely split between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena ahead of the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly polls, Congress leader Rashid Alvi on Thursday said the lust for power is affecting both parties that have been on the same platform for the past 25 years.

"This is the result that comes out when greed for power overcomes ideology. The greed for power is affecting both the parties," said Alvi.

Congress leader Manish Tewari echoing similar sentiments said that it is for the people of Maharashtra to judge who can serve them better.

"The squabbling was overtaking and I think the people of Maharashtra should watch it very carefully. The two parties are falling over each other even before the elections," said Tewari.

"The Congress-NCP Government is in Maharashtra and has served for 15 years. It is for the people of Maharashtra to judge who can serve better," he added.

The 25-year-old alliance between the BJP and Shiv Sena is in all likelihood headed for a formal split after neither side could reportedly come to an agreement on seat sharing for the Maharashtra Assembly polls.

However, hectic parleys are on as both the BJP and the Shiv Sena are making a last-ditch attempt at reconciliation.

Maharashtra will go to polls on October 15 while the counting of votes will take place on October 18. There are 288 assembly seats in Maharashtra.
