Hafeez steps down as Pak T20 captain following team's World T20 exit

Mohammad Hafeez has reportedly stepped down from the position of Pakistan's Twenty20 captain following the team's failure to qualify for the semi-finals of the ICC World T20 in Bangladesh.

Pakistan went out from the Super-10 stage after a disappointing 84-run defeat against the West Indies on Tuesday, failing to reach the last four for the first time in five editions of the tournament since its inception in 2007.

According to News.com.au, the all-rounder, who led Pakistan to the semi-finals in the last World T20 in Sri Lanka in 2012, said that he accepts responsibility for the early exit of the team this time, although he added that no one forced him to quit.

Hafeez, who opens both the batting and the bowling with his off-spin, further said that he feels it is for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to decide who will replace him as T20 captain and added that he is ready to join the ranks under any captain.

The report mentioned that Hafeez became the fifth Pakistan player to move on from the T20 captaincy in the last five years.

Pakistan has no assignment before their series against Australia in October when they play two Tests, three one-days and one T20 in the United Arab Emirates, the report added.
