India in driver's seat after fourth day of Test opener against Proteas

India has put themselves on the driver's seat on the fourth day of the first Test against South Africa at the Wanderers Stadium on Saturday as the hosts fought to stave off defeat after a direct-hit run-out of Graeme Smith ended a century opening partnership.

Set to make an improbable 458 to win, South Africa reached 2-138 at stumps, with India taking the two crucial scalps of captain Graeme Smith and veteran Hashim Amla, and Indian top-scorer Cheteshwar Pujara, who made 153, said that they are expecting more movement on Sunday as the wicket has variable bounce and the cracks are opening up.

According to News.com.au, although the home side had reached 108 without loss with both Smith and Alviro Petersen batting with increasing confidence, however, Smith went for a risky single while on 44 and was promptly dismissed following which Amla, who replaced him, was bowled out by Mohammed Shami.

Petersen, who scored a half-century in his team's second innings for the first time in 27 Tests, was 76 not out at stumps with Faf du Plessis on 10.

The Indians were all out for 421 after lunch, leaving South Africa to negotiate 45 overs before the close of play as well as the whole of Sunday, the report added.
