An avalanche in the Siachen Glacier area has claimed the life of an Indian Army captain.
The incident occurred on Saturday in Jammu and Kashmir's Ladakh region.
The Indian Army soldier has been identified as Captain Ashwini Kumar of the Ladakh Scouts.
Colonel S.D. Goswami, the spokesman of the army's Udhampur-based Northern Command, said in a statement that Captain Kumar was killed when the army patrol of which he was a part, was hit by an avalanche in the southern ridge of the Siachen Glacier.
The others in the army patrol were rescued and the injured were being treated, he said.
Siachen is regarded as the world's highest battlefield where the Indian and Pakistan Armies face each other in an eyeball-to-eyeball contact.
