Indo-China talks focused on 'strengthening trust, countering terrorism'

Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar on Thursday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping had fruitful discussions on issues of mutual interest to both sides with special emphasis on strengthening trust, increasing trade and countering terrorism.

"There was discussion on strengthening trust, increasing convergence and trade deficit. Some time was spent on discussing connectivity issues, the issue of terrorism naturally came up. The need to strengthen cooperation between China and India on countering terrorism was discussed. Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT) was also discussed," he told the media here.

Jaishankar said the two leaders also discussed the present situation in earthquake-hit Nepal.

"There was some talk of Nepal. How India and China had responded to the earthquake situation in Nepal and also to Maldives when they had that problem with water. Political issues were discussed. Boundary issues were discussed, including peace and tranquility across the border" he added.

Prime Minister Modi earlier held summit-level talks with the Chinese President in Xi'an.

In his opening remarks, Prime Minister Modi appreciated the Chinese leader for warmly receiving him outside Beijing. President Xi in turn, recalled his visit to Ahmedabad in September last year where he was warmly received by Prime Minister Modi. The Chinese President said he was glad to receive Prime Minister Modi in his home town.

Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to travel to Beijing later in the day.
