Iran President Hassan Rouhani has said that India and his nation play a key role in fighting terrorism, calling for New Delhi and Tehran to enhance their cooperation in countering violent extremism in the region.

In a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Ufa, Russia on the sidelines of the BRICS and the SCO summits on Thursday, President Rouhani reportedly pointed to the violence in Iraq and Afghanistan and said that the presence of terrorist groups in the region has aggravated the situation.

He also assured that Tehran would cooperate with New Delhi in the energy, investment, tourism and technology sectors.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi appreciated Iran's proposal made to the United Nations General Assembly in 2013, the World Against Violence and Extremism (WAVE). According to reports, the Prime Minister also highlighted Tehran's role in fighting terrorism and stated that India and Iran should cooperate in fighting the spread of terror.
