A Kurdish official has reportedly said that the Islamic State (IS) militants are finally retreating from the Syrian town of Kobane following weeks of fighting.

Idriss Nassan said that the IS had lost control of more than 20 percent of the town in recent days, reported the BBC.

United States defence officials have claimed that hundreds of militants have been killed around Kobane as the coalition against IS intensified its air strikes in the town that is located on the Syrian-Turkish border.

The news came as U.S. President Barack Obama and other European leaders agreed to do more to halt the group's advance in Iraq and Syria.
