The Indian Space Research Organisation is preparing to launch its fourth Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System satellite on an unscheduled date this month.

According to a release by the Department of Space, this satellite would be the fourth of the seven satellites required for the IRNSS, which aims to provide positioning and navigational services in the Indian mainland and surrounding region up to 1,500 kilometres and to provide positioning services over the Indian region with an absolute position accuracy of better than 20 metres.

Three IRNSS satellites will be in a geostationary orbit, while the remaining four will be in a geosynchronous orbit.
