Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Jahnagir Tareen on Saturday resigned as the general secretary of the party, a day after he was disqualified for life as a parliamentarian by the Supreme Court.

"I have resigned as SG (secretary general) of PTI. Will remain part of the struggle. Hoping to see Imran Khan as Pakistan's next PM," Tareen said in a tweet.

The apex court had disqualified PTI Secretary General Jahangir Tareen for life under article 62 (1) (f) of the constitution for not disclosing his off-shore company in nomination papers.

However, PTI Chairman Imran Khan got a huge relief from the top court after a petition seeking his disqualification from the Parliament was rejected by the top court

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Hanif Abbasi had filed two petitions seeking disqualification of Khan and Tareen from Parliament allegedly for not declaring assets and ownership of offshore companies in nomination papers.

Tareen called the petition by PML-N's Hanif Abbasi "malicious" and claimed in his resignation letter that the apex court disqualified him on "an interpretation of a legal term".

"It is disappointing that the country's highest tax paying Parliamentarian stands disqualified on a flimsy technical ground," he said.
