Kashmir Valley teachers become 'chowkidars' to protect schools

The burning of schools in the Kashmir Valley has prompted the Mehbooba Mufti regime to issue orders to teachers to keep watch at night to prevent such events.

So far around 27 schools have been torched across the state.

Most of these schools have been burnt during at night, and therefore, the state government has ordered schools to produce rosters, so that the employees can take turns keeping a watch on schools at night.

Most schools, however, only plan to use chowkidars or non-teaching staff for this exercise, which will supervised by the teachers.

"This is a slap from the government on our society. We have been promoted from teacher to chowkidar. Every teacher has to do his/her duty according to the roster. We have no hope with this government," a resident teacher told ANI.

Private schools in the area have opposed this move. However, the all chief educational officers have advised that this is for their own good.

However, heads of private institutions say they are burdened with the task of asking teachers and other staff to work nights and protect the schools. The fact that the lives of the staff are also in danger also worries them.

Lady staffers have been exempted from doing night duty, which has left school administrations unhappy.
