Prolific centuries from skipper Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane have put India in a commanding position after two days play in the third and final Test against New Zealand here at the Holkar Stadium.

Kohli (211) scored his second Test-match double-hundred while Rahane made 188 before the hosts declared their first innings at 557-5 and left New Zealand a tricky nine overs to bat out at the end of Day Two.

At stumps , Tom Latham (6*) and an aggressive Martin Guptill (17*) took the visitors to 28-0.

Earlier, resuming the day at 267-3, Kohli and Rahane shared a 365 run partnership, which was India's highest-ever partnership for the fourth wicket.

In the process, Kohli, who scored 200 against West Indies in July, in Antigua, became the first Indian batsman to make two double-hundreds as captain. The skipper also became the first Indian batsman since Sachin Tendulkar in 2010 to score two double-tons in a year.

They both dominated the Black Caps and kept them to three wicketless sessions before Jeetan Patel finally broke through in the first over after tea.

When Kohli declared half an hour before close, Rohit Sharma (51*) and Ravindra Jadeja (17*) were at the crease after adding a quick-fire 53 runs in 59 balls for the unbroken sixth wicket.

The visitors are still trailing by 529 runs with all ten wickets in hands and it would require some extraordinary batting performance if they have to save the game and avoid a probable 3-0 whitewash.
