The locals staged a protest outside the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Monday against the Union Territory administration's notice to vacate the government land occupied by them.
The protestors, who wanted to meet the Deputy Commissioner, started pelting stones at the cops when they were denied permission.
The police personnel deployed on duty later baton charged some of the protestors and fired aerial shots to bring the situation under control.
The protestors were later taken into preventive custody.
"The crowd from a particular colony gathered here and started pelting stones which injured some police officers and a few passersby. Some have been detained and will be produced in front of the magistrate," a police officer said.
"We are only here to claim our rights. I only want my house back. We got notice to vacate two days back," an angry protestor said.
