A villager fought a crocodile with his bare hands in order to free his son from its jaws in north-eastern rural Mutoko, Zimbabwe.

According to the Herald newspaper, Tafadzwa Kachere and his 11-year-old son Tapiwa were trying to cross a river on Christmas eve, when the crocodile attacked the boy, News 24 reported.

Kachere immediately jumped onto the crocodile's back and tried to force open its jaws, beating its head with his fists and poking its eyes with reeds.

The crocodile then released the child and turned on to the father who wrestled to free himself from its grasp.

Even though they survived, the child lost a leg and Kachere's arm was severely gored.
