Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee (DSGMC) president Manjit Singh on Sunday called on Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh over the issue of SIT probe in the 1984 riots.
"We have requested the Home Minister that recommendations given by GP Mathur ji should be taken into consideration, he assured us justice will be done," Singh told media persons after the meeting.
Earlier in the day, Singh said that the Akali Dal has been fighting from a long time for justice for the riot victims.
"G P Mathur has given their finding to the government. He has recommended an SIT probe in the 1984 riots cases. They should look into the cases which have been closed or are pending. I would like to thank the Prime Minister for the Justice Mathur committee. Akali Dal has been fighting from a long time for justice," he told ANI.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Randeep Surjewala said he hoped the step was not taken with a political motive. "Justice is not a matter of electoral gain, if it's an electoral ploy, it's condemnable," he said.
A government-appointed committee has recommended constitution of a SIT for re-investigation of the 1984 anti-Sikh riot cases.
The committee headed by former Supreme Court Judge Justice (retd) GP Mathur had submitted its report to Rajnath Singh last week and had recommended fresh probe of the anti-Sikh riot cases.
Earlier in December, the Government had approved a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh each to the kin of victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
Over 3,000 victims of the 1984 violence, triggered by the assassination of former prime minister Indira Gandhi, are likely to benefit from the government's announcement.
