Floyd Mayweather has defended choice of Andre Berto as his opponent in what could be his last bout of his career.

The unbeaten American boxer will square off against former-welterweight champion Berto on 12 September in Las Vegas in his attempt to equal Rocky Marciano's 49-fight undefeated streak.

Mayweather has been on the receiving end of the critics who accused him of picking an easy fight against Berto, who lost three of his last six bout.

However, Mayweather said that he chose Berto because he was exciting, adding that the latter was a tough competitor and a former world champion.

The 38-year-old insisted that Berto was a worthy contender who would push him to the limit, the BBC reported.

Earlier, Mayweather had claimed that his 49th fight in September would be the last when his current six-fight deal with American broadcaster Showtime expires.
