Former Ryder Cup captain Paul McGingly believes that Rory Mcllroy needs to respond to the challenge posed by US Open winner Jordan Spieth.

Mcllroy is currently ranked number one in world rankings and is facing a great threat to his top position from Spieth who is just 1.72 points behind him.

McGingly said that Spieth was putting it to Mcllroy and that could only be good for the world number one, adding that Mcllroy needed to step up his plate, the BBC reported.

Mcllroy was 12 shots behind Spieth after 36 holes at Augusta before closing with rounds of 68 and 66 to cut the deficit in half and finish fourth.

However,Mcllroy said that he has taken from the loss and hopes that he has a great chance in the next two majors.

Earlier, the American Spieth held his nerves to claim the US Open title, his second major of the year, in a dramatic finish at the Chambers Bay on Sunday.
