Frenchman Richard Gasquet prevailed in an epic five-setter against Canadian Milos Raonic, winning 6-7, 7-6, 2-6, 7-6, 7-5.
In other matches, Italy's Roberta Vinci, once again made the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-2 win over compatriot Camila Giorgi and Simona Halep bowed out with a 2-6, 6-7 loss to Italy's Flavia Pennetta.
Spain's David Ferrer and Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova won their matches to go through to the next round.
