Naga students initiate blood-donation camp for unprivileged patients

In a move to render services to the people, especially for the needy and poorer section of the society, a blood-donation camp was held at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) hospital recently in the national capital.

Organised by the Naga Students' Union Delhi (NSUD), an apex student body in the city and Helping Hands, a front-runner NGO for the northeast people under the theme 'Donate Blood, Save Life', the day-long blood donation camp aimed to encourage the people to donate blood for the needy.

Most importantly, the camp educated people, including the voluntary donors, about the harmless, painless and safety measurements they should take while donating blood.

Joint Commissioner of Police, Rashtrapati Bhavan, Robin Hibu said, "We have almost 12 lakh population from the northeast living in Delhi and NCR. Many times I find people asking us for blood and that is really problematic for us, so we thought why not we have some kind of blood bank, so we have our northeast blood bank here in AIIMS. I am very happy that NSUD has started a massive blood-donation camp for the poor people from the northeast."

Over 100 willing donors from the Naga community joined the first-of-its-kind drive.

The collected 30 percent of the blood from the donors will be used for the Northeast Blood Bank, while the remaining will be used especially for the Naga patients in Delhi.

President, NSUD, Luikang Bruce said, "This is an important project that we have taken up. We had lots of patients who need blood at any time and till now we don't have such facility to tackle the issue when they need blood. So, we took up this project to store the donor's blood in the blood bank and help our people in a little way and contribute to saving someone's life."

"Human life is precious and priceless and what you have inside of you is something that money cannot buy it. So, it is important that if you are thinking of giving or donating anything from blood to organs to others, I think that we should do it because there are people who are in need," said Notoli, a donor.

During the course of blood donation, a dedicated team of qualified professionals from AIIMS hospital assisted the donors with stringent screening procedures, proper documentation in processing, collecting and testing the blood.
