The nation is observing National Consumer Day today, as on this day, the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 received the assent of the President. The Act is considered to be a historic milestone in the consumer movement in the country.

The Act provides effective safeguards to the consumers against different types of exploitation such as defective goods, unsatisfactory services and unfair trade practices.

The day provides an opportunity for highlighting the importance of the consumer movement and the need to make every consumer more aware of their rights and responsibilities.
