Nepal lawmakers underline need for debate on Indian power cooperation proposal

Members of Nepal's Parliament have stressed on the need for a thorough discussion on the Indian Government's proposal of developing Nepal's hydro-power sector.

Addressing a Legislature-Parliament meeting here on Thursday, Haribol Gajurel of the UCPN (Maoist) was quoted by nepalnews.com, as saying that the government must make its views known to the public through the parliament on the issue.

Bhim Rawal of the CPN (UML) emphasized that the government has to inform the House on the contents of the Indian proposal on power trade.

He stressed that any agreement on the power trade should be for mutual benefit.

Kamal Thapa of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal said it is necessary to make the visit of the Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj beneficial for both countries.

Likewise, C P Mainali of the CPN-ML drew the government's attention to making Swaraj's Nepal visit successful and added that the government should start talks with all political parties on this.

Prem Suwal of Nepal Workers and Peasants' Party highlighted that the government must immediately inform the House on the contents of the Indian proposal of power deal submitted to the government of Nepal.
