No more protests, all is well at FTII now: Gajendra Chauhan

Gajendra Chauhan, who had taken charge as the Chairman of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) amid protests earlier this month, said on Wednesday that the situation at the institute was under control and that there were no protests at the present.

"There are no protests in FTII right now. I have officially joined now and nothing has happened. They are protesting right now regarding the Hyderabad suicide issue," Chauhan told the media here.

On January 7, the students of FTII had staged a massive protest and around several were detained by the police as Chauhan took charge as Chairman.

It was a forgettable day for Chauhan as several students gathered outside the college premises to protest against him and five others, trying to prevent the entry of the newly elected committee.

Following the commotion, police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the agitating crowd. Several protesters were also pushed inside vans and taken to the police station.

The newly appointed Chairman outlined that the governing council was committed to the Union Government's vision of transforming FTII into a national institute of excellence.

Chauhan, who had a forgettable outing on first day as FTII chairman, saw the agitating students being manhandled and detained by the Pune police.

The students had in October last year called off their protest, but said that they would continue to oppose Chauhan in a silent manner.
