A Boston-based nanotechnology firm has reportedly created a mobile device that can accurately test for AIDS in under an hour.
Nanobiosym has invented the iPad-sized device called as Gene-Radar that works by taking a blood or saliva sample or other bodily fluid and placing it on a nanochip, which is then put into the device for testing.
According to Mashable, the technology is expected to revolutionize medicine, track disease outbreaks in real time and help contain them, proliferate the personalization of medicine, and change the nature of an individual's relationship with his or her caretakers.
Chairman and CEO of Nanobiosym, Dr. Anita Goel explained that there are multiple types of AIDS tests, one is the 'quick and dirty' type, which is fast but not accurate and other are the 'gold standard' tests which take six months to yield results, but costs 200 dollars.
She said that with Gene-Radar, they have brought the cost down and time reduced to two weeks adding that it can also be used to track and contain disease outbreaks.
The report said that apart from the Gene-Radar device, the company has also developed an app.
Dr. Goel explained that the device allows for uploading data into a cloud in order to check for the particular disease spreading in one place.
The report added that Gene-Radar can track diseases with a genetic footprint from the beginning so that care can be swift and also factors in element, such as how a patient reacts to gluten, that could affect the type of medicine used.
