Congress leader P. L. Punia on Friday filed his nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha polls from Uttar Pradesh.
Punia's name was announced earlier on Tuesday by All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Madhusudan Mistry.
69-year-old Punia is a former bureaucrat and ex-chairman of National Commission for Scheduled Castes.
The Congress, which has just 28 MLAs, needs the support of nine more to see Punia through. The Samajwadi Party, which has 221 members, is expected to support Punia.
The polling for 10 Rajya Sabha seats from Uttar Pradesh will take place later this month.
