Pakistan releases 36 Indian prisoners as goodwill gesture

Over 36 Indian prisoners were released in Karachi on Friday as a goodwill gesture by the Government of Pakistan.

"36 Indian prisoners have been released from District Jail Malir by the Pakistan Government as a goodwill gesture. We have 424 more prisoners with us, some of whom are under trial, some are completing their jail term and some others who are under detention," said Deputy Superintendent of Jail Mohammad Hassan Sehto.

Meanwhile, one of the prisoners expressed his delight on being able to return home after spending 15 months in captivity.

"It's been 15 months since I have been here. I am extremely happy to be able to finally go home after such a long time. My parents, brother and wife will be really happy to see me," he said.

This development might be able to better the souring relations between the two countries.

Earlier today, Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said that the country wants a significant dialogue with India on all issues including Kashmir. He also said that he would not let the country's dignity and image be destroyed by anyone.

The Prime Minister's statement came during an in-flight press briefing on his return from the SAARC Summit in Nepal, after India's Ministry of External Affairs said that the country is for peaceful and co-operative relations with Pakistan but the emphasis should be on meaningful dialogue.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart were also seen shaking hands before the conclusion of the two-day long 18th SAARC Summit in Nepal earlier on Thursday.
