A contempt petition has been filed in the Pakistan Supreme Court against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for addressing the 70th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session in English.

The petitioner Mian Zahid Ghani in his petition stated that the Prime Minister contended flouted the Supreme Court verdict which notified the federal and provincial governments to use Urdu for official and other purposes without any delay, the Dawn reported

Ghani gave example of heads of others states including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe Russian President Vladimir Putin and others delivering their UNGA speech in their national languages.

The petition also stated that Sharif was aware about the Apex Court judgement and demanded his prosecution under the Article 204 of the Pakistan Constitution with Contempt of Court Ordinance 2003,

He also demanded the apex court to disqualify Sharif as member of the National Assembly under Articles 62 and 63 (1 g) of the Constitution.
