Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte for his very able leadership of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and conveyed his support for the country's fight against terrorism in Marawi.
"Prime Minister congratulated President Duterte for his very able leaderhip of ASEAN and ASEAN led Summits and process. He conveyed his support for Philippines fight against terrorism in Marawi, Secretary (East) in the Ministry of Exernal Affairs Preeti Saran said in a press briefing.
"He also welcomed East Asia Summit (EAS) adopting two very important statements on countering ideological narratives and propaganda as well as financing terrorism and these are two separate documents or statements adopted by EAS leaders," she added.
Saran said adoption of these statements hold importance as India has been affected by terrorism for three decades and acknowledged that it is now being recognised globally.
She further said that these documents also hold importance for regional peace and security to counter the scourge and menace of terrorism including cross border terrorism.
Prime Minister Modi had also urged the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) to intensify cooperation in fighting terrorism.
Addressing 15th ASEAN-India Summit, Prime Minister Modi said, "We have individually strived very hard to fight terrorism and violent extremism. It is time that we jointly address this challenge by intensifying cooperation in this crucial area.
