As the nation celebrates the 86th Dandi March anniversary today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered the satyagrahis who joined Mahatma Gandhi's clarion call for the Salt March to protest against the British salt laws.
"Saluting all those who joined the Dandi March, following Bapu's clarion call and inspired by his ideals," Prime Minister Modi said in a tweet.
The Prime Minister also tweeted a picture of the Mahatma Gandhi picking up grains of salt at the end of his march in Dandi.
It was March 1, 1930, when Mahatma Gandhi and 78 satyagrahis set out on foot for the coastal village of Dandi to protest British salt laws.
They covered 390 kilometres from Satyagraha Ashram, popularly known as the Sabarmati Ashram, to Dandi in south Gujarat.
This turning point in the freedom struggle of the nation has since inspired a number of marches.
The Sabarmati Ashram holds a special place as the starting point of the epic journey.
